The Pluralistic Frameworks of Ibn Rushd and Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im

Short Abstract: In a forthcoming book in Comparative Political Theory, I analyse the comprehensive and assiduous attempts of two Islamic political thinkers —the 12th-century Andalusian philosopher Ibn Rushd and the contemporary Sudanese reformist Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na’im— to theorise Islamic politics through an approach I refer to as pluralistic frameworks. A pluralistic framework is a systematic mediation of Islamic ethics and politics that incorporates extra-Islamic traditions of political thought from a diverse range of sources. Pluralistic frameworks selectively and self-consciously enable dialogue, synthesis, and hybridity with these extra-Islamic sources and often maintain a distinct conception of Islamic ethics that concords with a preferred set of political arguments.

Σε ένα υπό έκδοση τόμο, με τίτλο «Comparative Political Theory», αναλύω τις περιεκτικές και επίπονες απόπειρες δύο μουσουλμάνων πολιτικών στοχαστών —του Ανδαλουσιανού φιλοσόφου του 12ου αιώνα Ibn Rushd και του σύγχρονου Σουδανού μεταρρυθμιστή Abdullahi Ahmed An-Na'im— να θεωρητικοποιήσουν τη μουσουλμανική πολιτική μέσω μιας προσέγγισης, την οποία ονομάζω ως πλουραλιστικά πλαίσια. Ένα πλουραλιστικό πλαίσιο είναι μια συστηματική διαμεσολάβηση της μουσουλμανικής ηθικής και πολιτικής που ενσωματώνει εξω-ισλαμικές παραδόσεις πολιτικής σκέψης από ποικίλες πηγές.
