Περίληψη

In the Wren Library at Trinity College, Cambridge, there is a small Greek piece of Habakkuk, chapter 3 verse 5, a passage of the Bible with a particularly complicated transmission history (see the editions of the Septuagint by Rahlfs/Hanhart 2006 or Ziegler 1943). The script and the presence of folds suggest that the fragment was used as an amulet. This talk will make the usual steps taken by the papyrologist in treating an unedited piece, involving supplementing the text and proposing a date. It will also take a look at the use of passages from the Old Testament in amulets, thereby aiming to situate the artefact into its cultural context.
