Περίληψη

Philip Hardie  (Πανεπιστήμιο Cambridge): “Song Cultures  of Antiquity:  Prudentius,  Pindar,  Horace”

This talk explores how late antique Christian poets - especially Ambrose and Prudentius - adapt Greco-Roman lyric traditions to new religious and communal settings. Reading Prudentius alongside Pindar and Horace, it examines how Christian temporality reshapes praise poetry by merging past martyrdoms and biblical history with present liturgy and future hope. Through examples from the "Cathemerinon" and "Peristephanon", it shows how hymnody transforms classical lyric forms into vehicles of eschatological urgency, revealing how song cultures renegotiate genre, time, and community across pagan and Christian worlds.
